ACESA Executive Attend 5TH Annual Teacher Conference in Singapore

ACESA Executive Attend 5TH Annual Teacher Conference in Singapore

Margy Oshry, Richard Callison and Allen van Blerk attended the very successful Conference held by Cambridge in Singapore in October 2009. The theme was Language in Science and the conference focused on Science Subjects, English and the Cambridge Primary Program.

Besides liaising with Conference organizers the mission was to meet up with our equivalent New Zealand Association counterparts and to find speakers for a conference in 2010. Our intention is to hold a conference for Southern African Centres next year where we will focus on among other things, managing a Cambridge centre in South Africa, University Admission and importantly implementing the Cambridge Primary Program.

Any special requests for areas of focus can be sent to the ACESA secretary for consideration.

Wembley college visits Cambridge

Wembley College Cambridge visit February 2009

During February this year, our Headmaster, Andrew Norris and I enjoyed the privilege of spending a week in Cambridge. Mr Norris was invited to attend a two day Advisory Seminar on eLearning, eAssessment and eAdministration together with delegates from South Africa, Argentina, New Zealand, Pakistan, Kuwait, Egypt, Kenya, Oman, Jordan and Malaysia.

During our time there we were able to meet with the Product Managers of the subjects that we offer at Wembley College. This was most beneficial as we heard first hand about the processes involved with syllabus development, and the setting and marking of examinations. This also offered us the opportunity to voice any questions and concerns that our teachers had raised.

We enjoyed a tour of DC 10, a really large warehouse where examination papers are stored, sorted and printed. After our tour, we were struck by how rigorous and professional the whole examination process is at CIE.

We were able to visit both a private and a public school while we were there. The equipment that the students have access to is enviable, and it was exciting to see how eLearning and eAssessment is being put into practise in English schools.

Mr Norris and I were very grateful for the contacts that we made while in Cambridge. All the CIE employees that we met were very professional, helpful and passionate about what they do. It is comforting to know that CIE is thinking ahead to remain in front of future academic developments. What is also very exciting is the development and upgrading of the teacher support site and discussion groups so that communication with teachers from all over the world is easier and more accessible. The planned streamlining of the examination administration will make the job of the Examination Officer a whole lot easier!

We both found the trip extremely beneficial and were very impressed with CIE and its staff – the words innovative, efficient and professional can definitely be used to describe Cambridge International Examinations!
